Our Education Committee's Core Philosophy

We believe educational excellence is vital to maintaining a successful community. The focus of the education committee is to ensure that thriving and inclusive public-school options exist for every child on Johns Island. To accomplish this, JICA shall bring stakeholders together to actively influence the Charleston County School District to deliver high-quality education.

District 9 Education Committee Recommendations

Through a collaborative effort with the Charleston County School District (CCSD) and the Community, the District 9 (D9) Education Committee, which represents Johns Island and Wadmalaw Island, formed to review proven school models that could be implemented in an existing D9 Elementary School. This committee was led by our very own Education Chair, Michelle Faust. In addition, JICA Chair Nancy Bright and JICA Board member Leon Green were also committee members. Below is a summary of the committee’s recommendations:

Offer Programs Families Want
The committee found there were 3 distinct and clear school models that are attractive to families with young children. CCSD should align the following models with existing schools in District 9:

  • Montessori
  • Math and Science and/or Engineering
  • A traditional elementary school

Add Programs
The early recommendations of the committee were approved by the CCSD Board for implementation at Angel Oak Elementary for the 2017‐2018 school year: a 3 year old fee-based program, introduction to Spanish for 3 and 4 year olds, and a Spanish instructor for K‐5.

Give D9 Families Choices
The D9 Committee recommends for the 2018‐2019 School Year that CCSD implement a certified Montessori curriculum at a D9 elementary school and a Math and Science Curriculum at a separate elementary school within D9. The committee recommends that CCSD remove zoning requirements and allow parents to choose any D9 elementary school based on the best fit for their individual child/children.
