Our Education Committee's Core Philosophy

We believe educational excellence is vital to maintaining a successful community. The focus of the education committee is to ensure that thriving and inclusive public-school options exist for every child on Johns Island. To accomplish this, JICA shall bring stakeholders together to actively influence the Charleston County School District to deliver high-quality education.

Education Update

Montessori Update

The District 9 (D9) Education Committee recommended for the 2018‐2019 School Year that CCSD implement a certified Montessori curriculum at a D9 elementary school. Come get an update and show your support for a Montessori curriculum at Frierson Elementary School for the next school year.

Attention Islanders: this week is Homecoming!

While the match-up between the Military Magnet and the Mighty Islanders is the main draw… students, parents and community members are invited to participate in Homecoming activities:

Tickets are on sale at St. Johns High School in the main office.

Dangerous Intersection

JICA has received feedback about the intersection at Main Road and Chisolm Road. Families attending St. Johns High School and Angel Oak Elementary School have to navigate this dangerous intersection each day. We are working with the City of Charleston to evaluate a solution.

Education Town Hall Follow-Up

In July, JICA helped facilitate an Education Town Hall meeting with CCSD. There was a GREAT turn out and we wanted to pass along all of the answers to questions that were submitted.

School of Engineering Tour

The District 9 (D9) Education Committee recommended for the 2018‐2019 School Year that CCSD implement a Math and Science Curriculum at an elementary school within D9.  Mt. Zion Elementary School Principal, Deborah Fordham, has initiated a school tour in the upstate that aligns with this D9 recommendation.

Principal Fordham, members of the CCSD staff, parents, and community members will visit A. J. Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering in Greenville on October 5th.

A. J. Whittenberg is the first elementary school in South Carolina with a school-wide engineering curriculum and one of the most technologically advanced elementary school in Greenville County.

Community Open House

Mark your calendar! Principal Judith Condon of Angel Oak Elementary School will host a community open house. Come meet Principal Condon and check out the newly renovated school.
