About

Our Mission

Our mission is to protect the island we love by encouraging responsible growth and preservation. We believe the future of Johns Island depends on protecting rural spaces while creating a vibrant community.

About Us

The Johns Island Community Association (JICA) was established in 2016 and is led by Johns Island residents determined to build a great future for our families and neighbors. JICA strives to work with all existing citizen groups, elected officials, and government agencies to support the community and resources on our island.

Nancy Bright has called Johns Island home since she was 10 years old. She lives on the island with her husband and two children.

Nancy is a project manager with 16 years of experience in communications, operations, and leadership. In addition to project management, she has experience in business including logistics, procurement, finance, information technology, and policy development.

Nancy has worked with a diverse range of stakeholders on projects and enjoys solving problems. She holds two master’s degrees from The Citadel and a bachelor’s degree from College of Charleston. In addition, she is a graduate of Leadership South Carolina, Class of 2013.

Nancy is a member of the Project Management Institute, an international non-profit association for the project, program and portfolio management profession. She earned her Project Management Professional (PMP) credential in 2013.

Gregg Newby graduated from the University of Philadelphia with a B.S. in Organic Chemistry and also holds a Global Business Development Certificate from the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania. Gregg started his career in the Advanced Materials Industry and remains in that business sector today.

He has held a wide range of career Management positions from Research & Development, Manufacturing and Commercial including assignments working and living in Europe and Asia. Gregg is currently the Global Business Development Manager for RTP Company, a global leader in high performance plastic composites.

In addition to his full time position, he enjoys his Charleston Chapter volunteer activities with Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing as a Board Member. PHWFF is an organization dedicated to the physical and emotional rehabilitation of disabled active military service personnel and disabled veterans through fly fishing and associated activities including education and outings.

Gregg lives with his wife Terry on Johns Island and has called the Charleston area home for over 25 years. Gregg and Terry have two grown children Shawn and Meghan who both live locally.

For over seventeen years, Kirk has been an advisor for Medicare, long term care, disability insurance, life insurance and annuities. 6 years ago he partnered with Franklin & Associates a Charleston based insurance brokerage founded by Barbara Franklin.

Over the years Kirk has provided educational programs on the subject of insurance planning for civic, community and professional groups. He regularly assists attorneys, financial planners, business owners, and other professional advisors who have concerns about insurance planning for their clients. He is "Certified in Long-Term Care" (CLTC), a unique qualification enabling him to successfully create a plan that preserves the emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing of a client's family.

Kirk is a graduate of Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida where he played baseball and majored in Environmental Science with minors in literature and philosophy. He and his family have lived on Johns Island since 2006.

In 2000, Michelle moved to the Charleston working in program management for an automotive manufacturing company.  In 2011, she shifted her career to Quality Management Systems and is focused on implementing and improving processes and procedures in core business areas.

She is currently employed as a Quality Manager for a chemical company where she is responsible for the maintenance of the Quality System and driving continual improvement.  

Michelle is a member of the American Society for Quality and has Six Sigma Green Belt certification.   

Michelle moved to Johns Island in 2012.  She enjoys the Johns Island community with her husband and son.

Lisa Vandiver has spent her career researching and advocating for sustainable development and coastal habitat protection throughout the Southeast region of the United States. She received her B.S. in Marine Biology and M.S. in Environmental Studies from the College of Charleston and a Ph.D. in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of South Carolina. Her Masters and Ph.D. research evaluated the stormwater pollution and volume retention efficacy of vegetated buffers and Low Impact Development practices (bioretention swales, pervious pavers, etc.) in the Charleston region.

Lisa currently works for NOAA’s Restoration Center as a coastal habitat and water quality restoration specialist. There she works closely with local, state, and federal agencies and community organizations to support coastal restoration and protection throughout the Southeast region. Recent efforts include development of the Water Quality restoration plan for the Deep Water Horizon Oil Spill and Watershed Management Planning and Restoration to reduce pollution threats to coral reef habitats in the Caribbean.

Lisa has lived in the Charleston region for over 20 years and lives on Johns Island with her husband, Sam, and their twin girls.

Much of Ali's eleven-year career has focused on communications work for organizations that serve the underserved. Since 2013, she has worked for an agency that focuses on expanding healthcare access in rural and underserved areas of South Carolina through recruitment, retention and education programs for students and health professionals.

In 2015, Ali also started her own graphic design and communication strategy company, where she has focused on helping other companies, especially those led by female entrepreneurs, implement the branding and communication tools they need to grow their own businesses.

Ali received her B.S. in communications studies from Northwestern University and her master's degree in public relations and advertising from The University of Alabama.

Ali has lived on Johns Island for more than five years with her husband, dog and cat.
