The Johns Island Community Association realizes this is a controversial project. We also understand that completing I-526 will take several years once funded - and still will not solve all of our traffic issues.
Regardless of the project's outcome, Johns Island faces serious traffic and development issues.
If I-526 is extended to the Island, we must remain vigilant against urban sprawl and run-away development.
If the I-526 project does not move forward, then we must do everything we can to reduce "off island" trips through better development.
In any case, we must improve our existing infrastructure now.
I-526 Completion History and Timeline
January 2019 - The State Infrastructure Bank approved amended agreement to fund I-526 completion. The Charleston County Council subsequently approved the agreement as well.
June 2018 - The State Infrastructure Bank voted to kill the I-526 extension project
Feb 2017 - The Charleston Area Transportation Study (CHATS) board unanimously agrees to financially support the completion of I-526 by allocating up to $200M toward the completion of I-526.
January 2017 - Charleston County Council introduces an ordinance committing the County to dedicate up to $150M toward the completion of I-526.
Fall 2016 - The SIB reversed its decision and allows Charleston County until March 2017 to cover the remaining costs.
May 2016 - The State Infrastructure Board (SIB) Voted 3-2 AGAINST allowing the City and the County more time to fund I-526
Spring 2016 - Both the City and the County are developing options to fund the remaining costs, and have asked the State Infrastructure bank for additional time to formalize these plans and perhaps pass a tax referendum in the November.
April 2016 - Charleston County Council meets to decide if/how to fund the remaining $353M for the project.
December 2015 - State Infrastructure Bank gives Charleston County and the City of Charleston until March 30, 2016 to present plans to fund the remaining $353M for the project.
Summer 2015 - Project cost estimates grow to over $770M.
December 2012 -
selected and approved by Charleston County Council.
2013 - Project cost estimates grow to $558M.
2012 - Project cost estimates exceed $420M. State Infrastructure Bank (SIB) asks Charleston County to fund the additional costs. Charleston County claims it "does not have the ability to obtain or provide additional funding for the difference in the $420 million."
Summer 2010 - Draft environmental study complete. SCDOT asks for alternative plans.
Fall 2008 - Public information meetings held.
Fall 2007 - Environmental study commissioned.
2006 - Charleston County uses sales tax transportation projects as a "local match" and applies for funding from the South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank (SIB). SIB commits $420M to fund the project.
Summer 2004 - Charleston County voters approve 1/2-cent sales tax to fund infrastructure and "greenbelt" projects.
